What Is Thermage?

Thermage is a skin-tightening procedure that uses radiofrequency energy to stimulate collagen production and shorten existing collagen fibers. This non-invasive procedure results in tighter, firmer skin and requires little to no downtime. Patients who undergo Thermage will notice some improvement immediately and will continue to see gradual changes over a six-month period, so the results look natural rather than sudden or drastic. Thermage can also be utilized to improve the appearance of cellulite. We recommend that treatment for cellulite with Thermage be preceded by Synergy treatments, which mobilize lymph fluid and improve the overall appearance of the treated area. Thermage is a versatile procedure that can be used to treat many areas of the body, including:

  • Face
  • Eyelids
  • Neck
  • Abdomen
  • Knees
  • Thighs
  • Buttocks
  • Arms

Thermage is performed at our Houston treatment facility and is a safe, comfortable procedure that requires no sedation or topical anesthesia. Depending on the area being treated, the process can take as little as one hour. When radiofrequency energy is applied to the skin, it generates heat deep within the dermis ? the area of the skin where collagen is generated. This heat stimulates collagen growth, facilitating the tightening of the skin and reduction of wrinkles. Thermage is a unique procedure because it is collaborative. Dr. McNamara relies on patient feedback to achieve a level of heat which is “hot, but tolerable.” This level of heat is maintained throughout the procedure to achieve optimal results.

Thermage Candidates

The ideal candidate for Thermage at our Houston facility is in general good health, does not smoke, and is relatively young. These characteristics are typical of an individual who is able to generate abundant collagen and will therefore see outstanding results. Because the radiofrequency energy utilized generates a low level of electrical current within the body, Thermage is not used in individuals with pacemakers or a history of abnormal heart rhythms. Patients with mild to moderate skin laxity who undergo Thermage can ramp up their collagen production and see quite positive results. If modest results are achieved with one treatment, a second treatment, six months after the first, may result in the desired improvement. Side effects from Thermage are mild and temporary and may include redness, swelling, bruising, tingling, and soreness. Overall, Thermage has an excellent safety record and is a great option to tighten skin without surgery.
