Fillers have revolutionized our approach to improving facial appearance. They can correct asymmetry, minimize circles under the eyes, improve acne scars, and reverse the appearance of aging. We currently use four different types of fillers at The Skin Renewal Center. This will undoubtedly change as new products become available. Each of the fillers have unique properties which allow us to tailor to the treatment to meet the patients aesthetic needs.
The following is a list of the fillers used at The Skin Renewal Center as well as a description of their unique properties and uses:
Radiesse
Radiesse is a non-toxic, non-allergenic filler that reduces the appearance of wrinkles and skin folds around the mouth and nose. Radiesse is popular for its long-lasting results
You can expect:
· INSTANT RESULTS that may last a year or more in many patients.
· REJVENATE your skin with the filler proven to stimulate collagen production.
· REPLENISH the youthful look of your skin by restoring volume lost over time.
The volume, flexibility and strength inherent in young healthy skin is due to collagen. Facial volume diminishes over time as part of the aging process due to the gradual breaking down of your own natural collagen. With the loss of collagen comes the loss of elasticity and volume, resulting in the wrinkles, facial lines and skin laxity that rob your skin of its youthful appearance.
Replenishing lost volume is the ideal way to achieve wrinkle reduction. RADIESSE® wrinkle filler utilizes your own natural collagen to smooth out the signs of aging. RADIESSE wrinkle filler's unique formulation stimulates collagenesis – the production of new collagen – which results in a smoother, more youthful appearance. A good option for natural looking wrinkle repair, Radiesse can last two years or more, though touchups may
be necessary throughout this time period.
There may be minimal swelling, which usually subsides in 24 to 36 hours. There may also be some discomfort and bruising. We offer VitaMedica Recovery, a botanical combination providing anti-inflammatory support for those prone to bruising. It includes Bromelain for pre-treatment and Arnica for post-treatment. This combination effectively minimizes the swelling, inflammation and bruising that can accompany an injection to the soft tissue.
Juvederm
Juvederm, an injectable gel filler, is an ideal option whether you want a natural-looking lip enhancement, to smooth away wrinkles around the mouth, or correct marionette lines. Just one treatment can restore volume and the smooth appearance of youthful skin for up to one year.
Juvederm produces such natural results because it is made of a naturally occurring substance in your skin called hyaluronic acid which helps to restore both volume and hydration. In one short office visit Dr. McNamara can plump out the unsightly vertical lines around the mouth, fill "smilelines" or "parentheses" (nasolabial folds), or subtly enhance the fullness of your lips.
Frequently as men and women get older the lips are drawn inward which causes them to appear thin. Thin lips can create a harsher appearance which can easily be remedied by an experienced and skilled physician. Lipenhancement is frequently performed in conjunction with the softening of the nasolabial folds. It can also smooth out or "unpleat" the unsightly vertical lines that frequently occur as women get older.

Sculptra Aesthetic
Sculptra has literally changed the lives of many of my patients. The transformation and improvement in appearance has been so impressive for most patients that their outlook on life has skyrocketed. Sculptra, or poly-L-lactic acid, vigorously stimulates collagen production to create volume and improve the firmness of the skin. I have been using this product for almost a decade and performed many hundred of treatments. Because of my expertise, I was asked by the maker of Sculptra to participate in a 5 year national study of this product. The results of the study will probably be published next year.
Sculptra is very versatile and can be used to address a number of cosmetic needs. Wrinkle correction and restoration of volume loss are the two most common uses. Sculptra is one of our longer lasting fillers and results may last as long as 18 months or longer. The longevity depends on the degree of initial collagen response and the location treated.
It is very important for patients to understand that Sculptra is administered as a series of treatments. Many patients prefer the subtle improvement in appearance over time. Each treatment session needs to be followed by firm massage administered by the patient five times a day for five days. This is critical to achieving the best cosmetic results. The technique will be clearly explained and demonstrated after each treatment.

Artefill
Artefill is the only "permanent" filler approved by the FDA for use in correcting the nasolabial folds--smile lines. Artefill consists of micro-spheres of polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) suspended in a mixture of bovine collagen, lidocaine, and buffers. PMMA is the same material used for lens replacement after cataract surgery. It has a long track record of safety and was approved by the FDA for cosmetic use in 2006.
Administered by injection, similiar to the other fillers, Artefill creates a matrix through which collagen and other connective tissue elements intersperse. As a result, wrinkle correction at 5 years post-treatment is even better than at year 1.
Because it results in permanent correction, Artefill is usually administered in 1 or 2 treatments. Deeper folds are best treated with multiple layers of Artefill in several treatments.
As with all fillers, care is taken to avoid vascular structures. Since the bovine collagen in Artefill differs slightly from human collagen, a skin test is performed to make sure that one does not react due to this difference.
Overall, patient satisfaction has been very high with this filler. It is very smooth in texture and is very natural within the skin. A simple skin test can be performed at the time of consultation to establish whether Artefill would be an appropriate choice of filler for you.
