What Is Laser Treatment?

Laser treatment utilizes light energy to dissolve the top layer of skin and remove damaged skin cells to reveal healthier, more vibrant skin. The extent of the laser treatment will vary based on the depth of the skin damage as well as the size of the area that is being treated. The type of laser used will depend on the desired outcome of treatment. Lasers produce organized light energy that is absorbed by specific targets in the skin. Most patients who undergo laser treatment at our Houston practice do need a few days of downtime and will need to follow post-procedure instructions to achieve optimal results. Dr. McNamara works with all patients to assure that their cosmetic goals are reached and that treatment corresponds with their schedule.

The Benefits of Laser Treatment

Lasers can rejuvenate the skin like no other treatment. Because there are a variety of lasers that vary in intensity, precision, and purpose, laser treatments are extremely versatile and can be adjusted to suit the specific needs of different patients. Lasers can be used to address a number of cosmetic issues including:

  • Acne scarring
  • Skin discoloration
  • Uneven pigmentation
  • Wrinkles
  • Birthmarks and sun spots
  • Tattoo removal

Types of Lasers

We are fortunate to be able to offer multiple types of lasers at The Skin Renewal Center. This allows us to tailor your laser treatment to meet your specific needs. One, or even two lasers, cannot correct all the various conditions that can be improved with therapeutic light treatment. This is because a laser emits one wavelength of organized light. Red and brown spots, purple blood vessels, wrinkles and tattoo ink each respond best to a very specific wavelength. That is why we utilize the following lasers at The Skin Renewal Center.

Fraxel is one of the most well-known and respected names in lasers. We utilize three types of Fraxel lasers, all which send columns of light energy deep into the skin to smooth wrinkles, improve acne, and diminish scarring. Fraxel re:store utilizes an Erbium laser and has minimal downtime after a treatment. Fraxel re:pair is powered by a CO2 laser which can resurface the skin more quickly; the tradeoff being a longer period of downtime. Fraxel Dual is excellent at treating fine lines and improving unwanted pigmentation. All of the Fraxel lasers are excellent at reversing sun-damage and rejuvenating the skin

The Medlite is a Q switched Nd:yag laser. Q switched means that the light is not released until it has reached maximum energy at a wavelength of 1064 nm. This energy is absorbed by brown pigment and tattoo inks which causes their destruction. Age spots or freckles can usually be removed in one or two treatments. Tattoos generally require 4 to 10 treatments due to the depth of the ink and variations in color.

The Sciton Contour TRL is a erbium:yag laser that treats the entire surface of the skin which creates smooth, consistent results. We use this laser primarily to perform a Micro Laser Peel® which is great at reducing fine lines and pigment. The amount of downtime is usually around three days with very quick, consistent healing. If you have sun-damaged skin, a Micro Laser Peel® is a great way to regain a smooth, healthy glow.

Vascular Lasers

These lasers are used to remove unwanted blood vessels by causing the blood within the vessel to coagulate. These blood vessels close and are eventually removed by the body. Red vessels respond nicely to treatment with a KTP laser. We treat purple or blue vessels with a Coolglide laser.
